Iceland economic crisis and more

Today , ( july 1 2009 ) a new Icelandic Coast Guard plane landed for the first time in Iceland.
This is a DASH 8 q 300 - type,and with all the neccesary equipment that a coast guard plane should have.
Two coast guard helicopter came in formation with the new plane.
Then after landing there where speaches at Icelandic Coast GUard HQ.
Before this,the coast used for the last 32 years, a Fokker 27 .
So it was about ti More..me to get a new plane for the Icelandic coast guard.

Today there was a protest meeting in Reykjavik.
People where protesting,that the parliement is going to accept the debt about the ICelave accounts.
One of the Banks that collapsed last year,had started an invesment scheme in Europe,with the name - Icesave.
And when the banks collapsed,they owed about 650 billion kronas.
The exchange rate is now - 1 dollar = 129 kronas .

And to pay that - the goverment must raise taxes,save in the welfare system,pay less pension to the old people and more.
People are angry ,that why should the public pay ,for what the viking bankers and politicians did .
Some firecrackers where shot during the protest today.
But it was ,of course,very peaceful.
Protest will be next saturday again - and mabey in the middle of the week - when the Icesave accounts are being discussed at parliement in Reykjavik - Iceland.

Yesterday on the 17th of june - it was ICelands national independence day.

And at nine in the evening this boat left Reykajvik harbour.

and in the middel of the video - you can hear them blast their horns a few time - and that was loud !

Today there was the dayli protest against the discussion on parliement about the Icesave saving accounts in Europe.
The goverment is about to put inot law,that the goverment will pay the debt,that the Banks made.
That means ,in the amount of 650 billion kronas.
People belive that ,if it will be payed by the goverment ,then taxes will  have to rise,and the welfare system in Iceland will go down.

The protest started peacefully,but then a few protesters sat down on the street in front of the parliement .
That was not acceptable by the police,and the protesters did not obey the police,so 8 where arrested.

Tonight ,was a great sunset in Reykjavik..

And lots of people around enjoying it.
Both on land ,and on the sea.
One was on a kajak,and others where on sea jets,having fun in the calm,warm,and clear evening.

I took the video and photos at around 22:30 ,local time ,in Reykjavik.and the sun is not even going under the horizon .

Today was a great day in Reykajvik - Boats of every size in Reykjavik harbour .
Resque boat in training ,sailboat and a speed boat and of course a bigger boat ( Cruise liner from Japan )
And of course ,peaceful protest in front of the ICelandic parliement building.
So peaceful that tourists from Japan cruise boat where there,and people just kissing in front of the building.
And the weather great ,as always ( well sort of ) and no police around .
If that isnt a peaceful protest ,well,then i dont know what a peaceful protest should look like !

Today three groups protested together in Reykjavik.
Home alliance ,protesting how the banking crisis is hurting the publics home - Loans increasing and all.
Students in university- the student loans are going down - because of the crisis.
And A group protesting that the goverment is going to pay the Icesave loans in europe - wich will probably mean - more taxes on the public in ICeland

But the protest was very peaceful - and they put tents in front of the parliement building - ( they had permission frome Reykjavik city )
And protesters shared coffie with the poloce and it was all very peaceful and friendly.

Great weather in Reykjavik today - calm ,sunny and warm
So lots of people having fun downtown Reykjavik.
Some where joking in munks outfits,otheres where just walking around and having fun,and of course ,the daily protest in front of the parliement building.
They where not many today - but they made some noise.

People where protesting how the goverment is treating the public during the banking crisis.
The promises before the election a few weeks ago ,are all forgoteen.
Discussion in parliemnt are about , how members of parliement are dressed ( they dont have to where ties anymore ) and discussing also about joining the Europian Union.
But while they are doing that ,people are moving to other countries ,and debts on peoples houses are going up ,while the price of the house is going down.
A lady making a speach today ,a member of the Social democratic movement,was bood at when she tried to defend the goverment.
Bubbi Morthens ,the Icelandic Rock King,sang a few songs.
But one man who was there ,started to plant potatos in front of the parliement .
THat got people and the media attention.
And people and children came and started helping him.
That is the message people want the goverment to see,the dont have money to buy food ,so what do you do then ?

An average ,one family per day,is now moving to other countries .
Icelanders are moving mostly to Norway.
And the goverment celebrates ,that Icelanders are moving from Iceland.
In a tv show this week,the Icelands Social minister ,mr. Arni Pall Arnasson,informed us ,that the goverment where going to help people who had bad bank debts.
He said that nobody would have to suffer for their bad debts,the goverment ,through the banks,would help people.
But later this week,he celebrated ,that familys where moving to other countries.
He said,that people would get educations and learn otheer jobs,and would come back to Iceland later,with great knowledge.

But history tells us,people wont come back.
If their lives are better in other countries,why should they move back to Iceland ?

Politicians in Iceland ,as in other countries,seem to live in an Ivory tower,and cant see what is happening on the ground ,where the public lives.

Tonight is the finals in the Eurovison song contest.
In Eurovision are all countries in Europe and Israel.
It it now being held in Moscow,because they won last year.
The countrie that wins,gets to hold the song contest next year.
And Iceland is in the finals ,and of course We will win !
But can we hold the song contest next year ?
Wouldnt we then go completely banckrupt ?
Eurovision is very popular in Europe and here in Iceland ,you do not see many people outside ,when the Contest is on.

The public in Iceland is now organizing a group effort to stop paying their loans to the Banks in Iceland.
About 20.000 thousand individuals have signed up to a group - that is called - Hagsmunasamtok heimilanna ( homes interest group )
The foreign loans people took in good faith, are now skyrocketting,so people that invested with foreing loans a house ,worth 25 million kronas - is now the house is worth 22 million kronas,but the loans are in the 30 millions or more.
People are angry at the banks .
Many have stopped paying of their loans,and many more are going to stop paying.
One member called this a financial civil war !

Many former Bank employes ,who bought stock in the Banks ,and got loans for from their bank,they made private companys around their investment ,so they dont have to pay.
One of the employes of Kaupthing Bank ,is the husband of the former Educational minister ,Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir.
People feel that the banks have stolen their money.
And still nobody is being investigated about the crisis.
